Experiencing Space
Spatial Translation
The focus of Project 1 is "Experiencing Space". You are required to explore issues of spatial poetics through simple design exercises. Working in groups of 3 to 4 students, you are to propose a scheme of Spatial Translation. You are required to design the scheme in the form of semi-open architecture by using 2 or 3 Modifying Elements of Architecture of your choice. You shall choose 1 of the 3 given hypothetical sites for this design work. The spaces in your scheme shall be translated from a given narrative to be interpreted by you and informed by precedent studies.
Project 1a - Precedent Studies : : Analysing spatial poetics in architecture
The objective is to identify, understand and analyse different modifying elements of architecture through precedent studies. Each group shall select one precedent study for each selected modifying element, analyse how the elements was employed in architecture in order to create spatial poetics and experiences.
Project 1b - Spatial Translation : Applying spatial poetics in architecture
Learning from the Precedent Studies in Project 1a and interpreting the given narrative, design 1 design scheme of spatial translation. The scheme shall be approximately 1,000m3 in volume. The scheme shall employ the selected modifying elements of architecture from Project 1a.
Reflection
In project 1, I have learned how interpret and perceive poetic, more importantly to keep on improving my design in order to express the poetics through spaces and usability. I even got my interest sparked when came across the knowledge of light and shadow and time and place while reading an article called light, place and temporal experience. I begun to appreciate more and embrace the use of light and shadows in design. Therefore, I chose Todao Ando's creation called Koshino House as my precedent study, it was one of the prime example. In our own project, we have named our building Temporal as we use light and shadow to create a temporal effect for visitors. Hope to learn more in the coming years.
