LIGHTING
Case Study : Lighting and Shading
SHADING
We used smartphone applications to collect data. For lighting, we set up a grid system within the chosen space to measure how much light (LUX) is reached by each point and took the readings from these fixed points at 9:00am, 12:00pm, 6:00pm and 9:00pm (including artificial light).
For shading we measured temperature (°C) and humidity (%) readings within the chosen room and outdoors from 6:00am-12:00am. Wind speed (m/s) was measured in conditions window open and fan off, window closed and fan on, finally window closed and fan off.
The aim of this project is to identify and study the effect of changes in thermal factors, on a person and in a room that are related to lighting and shading and then criticize the design of the chosen space in terms of thermal comfort by referring to the standards set by MS1525 , UBBL and GBI and finally propose a passive solution.
Reflection
In this module, I felt like I have grown closer and touch more on architecture elements. It opens up a new perspective to me into the understanding towards different elements associated with architecture. Therefore, I have gained knowledge about designs that help with environment and how it goes about, example the importance of green building, passive design, active design and so on. In this very project “Case Study : Shadow and Lighting”, I get to go hands on data collecting, data analysis, identifying problems and implement solutions. Unfortunately, I have face some challenges, which is using software to make orthographic drawings, but I have fun learning it and eventually get a hang of it. With the guidance of Mr. Edwin, we are able to complete our work smoothly. Nevertheless, I have awesome teammate, their never hesitate to help me out although they are not in-charge of that particular section, we enjoy working together a lot.
